Reading is at the heart of all learning and is valued and celebrated across the school.

We aspire for all children to read for pleasure to enable them to develop an effective literacy skillset during their time at school.

We believe that children who read for pleasure are motivated to read regularly.

Children are encouraged to read widely and often, and are supported to make their own book choices from the school library as well as sharing and reading texts in the classroom.

Books we recommend.....

Teaching Reading in the Early Years and Year 1

To develop the key skills in reading, all children in the Early Years and Year One take part in a daily phonics sessions following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme. In these sessions there is a focus on learning skills to decode words independently. All children are expected to have been taught phase 5 by the time they join Year Two.


Alongside their daily phonics session, all children in Key Stage 1 also take part in three weekly guided reading sessions with the teacher or a teaching assistant to consolidate their reading skills. The children in Year One and Two develop their breadth in reading by sharing a range of phonetically decodable texts from the Collins Big Cat Phonics reading schemes. These books are matched to the children’s letters and sounds phase. Following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Reading Model, the three reading sessions in Key Stage 1 focus on the same book and follow this structure: Read 1 – focus on decoding (the children’s ability to read the words on the page), Read 2 – Focus on prosody and fluency (children are expected to re-read the book with fluency), Read 3 – Focus on comprehension.


Children in Reception begin their reading journey by taking part in daily phonics sessions from the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Programme. Regular phonics assessments are used to determine when the children can be provided with a reading book which is matched to their phonics phase. Once children are ready to blend words, books from the Dandelion Readers reading scheme which are matched to their phonics phase are used within guided reading sessions. Within these sessions, the children’s comprehension skills are developed alongside their ability to decode words independently.


The children in Reception and Key Stage 1 also practise their reading skills by using a range of other phonetically decodable texts which are matched to their phonics phase including those from Songbirds. These texts are provided within classrooms for the children to read and enjoy and are also sent home for the children to practise their reading skills.
